Deputy Director of Nursing

SUMMARY:The primary objective of the Assistant Director of Nursing is to assist the Director of Nursing in planning, organizing, developing, and directing the daily functions of the Department of Nursing in accordance with the rules, guidelines, and regulations that govern our facilities and as directed by the Administrator. , Medical Director and/or Nursing Director, to ensure that the highest degree of quality of care is maintained at all times.

OBLIGATIONS AND ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Director of Nursing in planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, and directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing department in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines governing the long-term care facility.
  • Participate in the development, maintenance, and updating of our written policies and procedures that govern the daily functions of the nursing department.
  • Make sure the reference material kept at the nurses station is up to date. Recommend written material to the Director that will assist the nursing department in meeting the daily needs of residents.
  • Develop and regularly update nursing service objectives and philosophy statements.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of a nursing organization structure. Make oral and written recommendations to the Director, as necessary/required, regarding the operation of the nursing department.
  • Assist in the development of methods to coordinate nursing services with other resident services to ensure continuity of the total regimen of care for residents.
  • Make sure all nursing staff follow their respective job descriptions. Participate in the development, maintenance, and periodic updating of written job descriptions for each level of nursing staff in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Participate in facility surveys (inspections) by authorized government agencies as requested by the Administrator or Director of Nursing.
  • Assist the resident and the discharge planning coordinator in planning the nursing portion of the resident's discharge plan.
  • Perform administrative tasks such as filling out medical forms, reports, assessments, studies, graphs, etc.
  • Monitor IQ, QM, and facility survey reports and provide the Director with recommendations that will be helpful in eliminating problem areas.
  • Assist the Director in obtaining personnel information that must be published daily.
  • Agree not to disclose Resident's protected health information and to promptly report known or suspected violations of such disclosure to Manager.
  • Service on the Quality Assurance and Evaluation Committee, as indicated.
  • Schedule, attend, and participate in the development of the agenda for care plan team meetings, as needed.
  • Assist the Director in determining the staffing needs of the nursing department. Recommend to the Director the number and level of nursing personnel to employ. Assist the Director in the recruitment and selection of nursing staff.
  • Ensure that a sufficient number of practical and/or registered nurses are available for each shift to ensure quality of care is maintained.
  • Ensure there are a sufficient number of Certified Nursing Assistants available for each shift to ensure nursing care referrals are provided to meet the daily nursing care needs of each resident. Also make sure that all licensed practical nurses are enrolled in or have graduated from an approved licensed practical nurse program.
  • Develop work assignments and schedule hours of service and/or assist supervising nursing staff in completing and performing such tasks.
  • Delegate to the Responsible Nurse and Supervisory Nurses the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary to carry out assigned tasks.
  • Assist the Director in preparing performance evaluations as directed.
  • Make daily rounds in the nursing department to ensure all nursing staff are performing their job assignments to acceptable nursing standards. Report the results to the Director.
  • Review the complaints and claims made or presented by department personnel. Make appropriate reports to the Director as required or required.
  • Ensure that the department's disciplinary action is administered fairly and without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, age, gender, religion, disability, or marital status.
  • Interpret department policies and procedures for employees, residents, visitors, and government agencies as needed.
  • Make sure all nursing staff participate in the unit's TB testing program.
  • Participate in the interview and selection of residents for admission to the establishment.
  • Inform the nursing staff of new admissions, expected arrival time, room assignment, etc. Make sure rooms are ready for new admissions. Greet newly admitted residents upon admission. Escort them to their rooms as needed.
  • Review the nurse's notes to ensure that they are informative and descriptive of the nursing care provided, that they reflect the resident's response to care, and that the care is provided in accordance with the resident's wishes.
  • Schedule daily rounds to observe residents to determine if nursing needs are being met.
  • Monitor medication passages and treatment schedules to ensure medications are administered as prescribed and treatments delivered as scheduled. Report medication errors to the Director.
  • Provide direct nursing care as needed.
  • Report problem areas to the Principal. Assist in the development and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Participate in the development, planning, conduct, and scheduling of in-service training that provides “how to do the job” instruction and ensures a well-trained nursing department.
  • Attend the mandatory orientation for new employees.
  • Assist the Director in scheduling mandatory annual in-service training for staff. (OSHA, HIPAA, Abuse Prevention, Infection Control, etc.)
  • Assist the safety officer in developing safety standards for the nursing department.
  • Assist the Director of Nursing in the identification, assessment, and classification of routine and work-related functions to ensure that tasks where there is potential exposure to blood/body fluids are properly identified and recorded.
  • Ensure nursing staff work areas (nursing station, medication rooms, etc.) are kept clean and sanitary.
  • Ensure that all resident reception rooms, treatment areas, etc., are kept clean, safe and sanitary.
  • Ensure that all nursing staff participate and conduct all fire safety and disaster preparedness exercises in a safe and professional manner.
  • Ensure that an adequate stock level of medications, medical supplies, equipment, etc., is maintained at the facility at all times to adequately meet the needs of residents.
  • Assist the Director of Maintenance in developing a preventative maintenance program to keep nursing department equipment and supplies safe and operable.
  • Ensure that only trained and authorized personnel operate department equipment safely.
  • Participate in the development of preliminary and comprehensive written assessments of each resident's nursing needs. Assist the MDS/CPC in the planning, scheduling, and review of the MDS, including the implementation of RAPs and Triggers.
  • Encourage the resident and their family to participate in the development and review of the resident's plan of care.
  • Make sure team members provide care that reflects the resident's wishes.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information, including protected health information. Report known or suspected incidents of unauthorized disclosure of such information.
  • Make sure all nursing staff are aware of residents' rights and responsibilities, including the right to refuse treatment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

RATINGS: To perform this job successfully, a person must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential task. The requirements below are representative of the required knowledge, skill and/or ability.

  • You must have, at a minimum, a nursing degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Current State Licensed Registered Nurse at no charge.
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience as a supervisor in a hospital, nursing facility, or other related health care facility.
  • Must have a minimum of 6 months experience in rehabilitation and restorative nursing practices.
  • Current CPR certification is required.
  • You must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
  • Must be a member of the support team, contribute and exemplify teamwork and team concept.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when warranted by circumstances.
  • Must have the ability to deal tactfully with employees, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/staff and the general public.
  • Must have knowledge of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines related to nursing facilities.
  • You must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as a willingness to deal with difficult residents.
  • Must be able to link information about a resident's condition.

  • May be needed to help with the evacuation of residents in emergency situations.
